When is Return Day 2026?
Thursday, November 5, 2026 — two days after Election Day, as always. Return Day is held in even-numbered years on the Thursday after the election.

On and around The Circle in Georgetown, Delaware — the Sussex County seat. See Location.
Does it cost anything?
No. Return Day is free to attend, and the ox roast sandwiches are free too — sponsors and program book advertisers carry the cost.
Is Return Day really a holiday?
Yes. Return Day is a legal Delaware state holiday, observed as a half day in Sussex County.
How old is the tradition?
Return Day has been celebrated in Georgetown since about 1812 — more than two centuries — with roots in the 1791 act that moved the county seat from Lewes to Georgetown. The date of the very first Return Day is uncertain; it could have been as early as 1792. Per the Return Day Committee, 2026 marks the 214th Return Day.
What actually happens?
A parade in which winning and losing candidates ride together, the Town Crier reading the returns, the ceremonial burying of the hatchet in sand from Lewes, the ox roast, vendors, and entertainment. See Activities.
